Interview to Paolo Agnelli, Presidente of Trafilerie Aluminio Alexia
What does "entrepreneurship" mean to you?
Entrepreneurship is the ability to transform an idea into a concrete project. It means putting oneself on the line personally. It’s about telling a story so compelling that it captivates and convinces others to believe in the project—even to become part of it. It’s about being willing to sacrifice to create value not only for oneself but also for the community in which one operates. It means being visionary while keeping your feet firmly on the ground, facing daily challenges with determination and creativity.
What has been the most significant experience or lesson you have learned during your journey?
There have been several, but I’d like to share two personal anecdotes. The first dates back to 1970. I was twenty years old when my father asked me to visit some of our clients for the company “Baldassare Agnelli,” which produces cookware. The enthusiasm with which I was received—as the owner’s son paying a personal visit—made me realize for the first time how important direct relationships with customers are. In our case, these customers were retailers—our operational arm in the field. It also showed me how well-known our family name and brand already were: an honor and a responsibility. The second memory is much more recent. It was 1996, and we were inaugurating the first press at Trafilerie Alexia. I remember writing a note to my father saying, “Sorry for the delay.” At that moment, I realized I had fulfilled one of his dreams and expressed part of my gratitude. I—along with my brothe —had contributed to an important chapter in the Group’s history. We were no longer just third-generation entrepreneurs but aluminum industrialists.
What distinguishes the company in the competitive landscape?
The company—and indeed the entire industrial group—stands out for the quality of its relationships with clients and suppliers. We strive to be part of the final project by providing customized solutions and quality products. We bring to the table 117 years of history, experience, and innovation.
What is your personal and professional motto?
For years, I’ve adopted a saying: "Enter the factory and walk on the sheet metal." This phrase holds multiple meanings. Primarily, it’s an invitation to those who’ve never stepped into a factory to see firsthand how a production site works. It’s about marveling at discovering how it operates like a perfect mechanism, made of professions before machines.
ELITE: the ecosystem that helps small and medium enterprises grow and access private and public capital markets. Why is it an opportunity other companies should consider?
It’s increasingly important for companies to find innovative ways to grow and strengthen their position in global markets. Accessing networks of capital and structured training, such as those offered by ELITE, can be a springboard. It is up to the entrepreneur—who knows their company better than anyone else—to seize the potential difference between staying stagnant or becoming a market leader. ELITE is a tool that supports not only growth but also long-term vision.
